We’re looking for
Lund
Full time
Every day, we get opportunities to make a positive impact – on our colleagues, partners, customers and society. Together, we’re pioneering the solutions of the future and unlocking the full potential of precious resources. Trusted to act on initiative, we challenge conventional thinking to develop world-leading technologies that inspire progress in vital areas, including energy, food, water and shipping.
As we push forward, the innovative, open spirit that fuels our 140-year-old start-up culture and rapid growth also drives our personal growth. So, as we shape a more resourceful, less wasteful world, we build our careers too.
We create better everyday conditions for people. We do this by contributing to a more sustainable future through engineering innovation. We love what we do and we’re good at it. But now we want to be even better! We are looking for an M.Sc. thesis student to our Materials Technology and Chemistry department, R&D. So, what are you going to do today?
Alfa Laval is a global company with three key product areas: heat transfer, separation, and fluid handling. We have sales in more than 100 countries and in 2022 the order intake was about 5 500 million euro. The number of employees is about 23 000. The head office is in Lund, Sweden, where a major part of the research and development of plate heat exchangers reside.
About the master thesis projects
The research and development group in Business Unit Brazed and Fusion Bonded heat exchangers is looking for one or two master thesis students to carry on one of the following projects for the spring semester 2026:
Use of Machine Learning (ML) for heat transfer prediction and analysis.
In this project, the candidate will tackle the important steps of data mining such as business understanding, data understanding, data preparation, choice of models and evaluation. Machine learning models will be applied to both numerical and experimental data. This project will be performed in Python.
The aim of this project is to assess the data mining process and methodology.
The candidate should have an interest in machine learning, data processing, programming, fluid mechanics and heat transfer.
Computational fluid mechanics (CFD) modeling of plate heat exchangers using OpenFOAM.
In this project, the candidate will explore the modeling capability of OpenFOAM for plate heat exchangers. The focus will be on modeling methodology and model validation covering both iso-thermal and conjugate heat transfer of various geometries.
The aim of this project is to assess the capability of OpenFOAM for engineering simulation of plate heat exchangers.
The candidate should have an interest in method development, CFD, programming, fluid mechanics and heat transfer
Computational fluid mechanics (CFD) modeling of flow across expansion valve.
In this project, the candidate will investigate the flow behavior across an expansion valve. In a heat pump system, the expansion valve is located between the condenser and the evaporator. When the liquid leaving the condenser flows through the expansion valve and subsequent piping, it undergoes phase changes and disturbance that can affect the performance of the evaporator. The focus will be on the two-phase and flow modeling of the physics involved. The project will be performed with ANSYS Fluent.
The aim of this project is to provide insight into the fluid composition and flow characteristics at the inlet of an evaporator.
The candidate should have an interest in CFD, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer.
Who are you?
We are looking for curious and driven mechanical engineering students with an interest in numerical analysis, fluid mechanics and heat transfer who want to contribute to a sustainable future. All these projects are important to us therefore the right candidate should choose the subject that inspires him/her the most.
