The Master thesis project
Alfa Laval is a global leader in providing technical equipment essential for heating, cooling, separating, and transporting fluid products. Our products are integral in domestic appliances, industrial applications, and offshore settings. One of our largest product groups, Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers (GPHEs), are engineered from pressed plates stacked and separated by rubber gaskets, which enable efficient opening, closing and sealing. These gaskets are bonded to metal plates through mechanical means or adhesive bonding to ensure durability and reliability.
As part of the reconditioning process, adhesively bonded gaskets are de-bonded using various methods, including thermal treatment with liquid nitrogen. Understanding the primary mechanisms driving gasket de-bonding under these conditions is essential for enhancing the durability and lifetime of the adhesive bonds, and to improve the de-bonding process. This research aims to identify and model the factors that contribute to gasket debonding during thermal treatment, which is critical for reducing maintenance times and minimizing equipment downtime.
The project includes:
Conduct a literature survey on e.g. adhesive bonding and relevant separation methods.
Describe the reconditioning process and identify hypothetical factors influencing debonding mechanisms.
Design or choose a suitable test geometry to validate hypotheses and simulate debonding scenarios.
Perform experimental tests on selected geometry and GPHE plates to observe debonding under thermal treatment.
Optionally, build a computational model of the test geometry.
Who are you?
We are looking for one curious master thesis student within relevant field of education. You should be self-going, methodical, interested in adhesion, materials science or thermal analysis is a plus.
