Every day, we get opportunities to make a positive impact – on our colleagues, partners, customers, and society. Together, we’re pioneering the solutions of the future and unlocking the full potential of precious resources. Trusted to act on initiative, we challenge conventional thinking to develop world-leading technologies that inspire progress in vital areas, including energy, food, water, and shipping.
As we push forward, the innovative, open spirit that fuels our 140-year-old start-up culture and rapid growth also drives our personal growth. So, as we shape a more resourceful, less wasteful world, we build our careers too. This commitment to continuous improvement extends to every aspect of our work, including the ongoing optimization of our technologies.
One such area of focus is this project aims to optimize the design of a "Flower Hat" within industrial vessels. This device is used within vessels to direct and disperse steam uniformly but also to act as a barrier preventing the penetration of another fluid, fatty acids, into the other region. While the primary function of the Farmer Hat is to facilitate even steam distribution, it also impacts the overall flow dynamics within the vessel, potentially influencing process efficiency and product quality.
The key objectives include:
Develop strategies to reduce energy losses and pressure drop and improve operational efficiency.
Promote homogeneous steam distribution to prevent inconsistencies and enhance overall product quality.
Effectively prevent fatty acid intrusion into the steam region.
CFD Model Development:
Import and develop a detailed 3D CFD model of the vessel including the Flower Hat in accordance with Alfa Laval’s design suggestions.
Define boundary conditions, material properties (particularly of steam), and flow parameters typical of the operational environment as well as mesh sensitivity analysis.
Baseline Analysis:
Conduct initial simulations to establish baseline data for the current Flower Hat design, focusing on pressure drop and steam velocity distribution.
Design Modifications and Optimization:
Explore various design modifications of the Flower Hat.
If possible, utilize optimization techniques, such as parametric studies and sensitivity analysis, to identify key design features that impact performance.
Simulation and Validation:
Run CFD simulations for each modified design to analyze their effects on pressure drop and steam distribution.
Validate the simulation results to ensure the model's accuracy.
