Application Engineer Marine

Alfa Laval OceanGlide is an unique air lubrication solution with fluidic technology. It creates an even and controllable air layer across the entire flat bottom of the vessel, which is the best setup for reducing friction between the hull and the water. The proven reduction in drag means greater energy efficiency, lower fuel costs and less CO² emitted into the atmosphere. Along with reduced marine noise, these factors make OceanGlide an important step towards more sustainable shipping.

About the job

As an Application Engineer Marine at Alfa Laval in Rotterdam, you support the Sales organization throughout the sales process and report to the Manager Application Engineering.

You are responsible for preparing structured technical proposals, specifications, and supporting documentation that help convert customer requirements into technically sound and commercially relevant solutions. You contribute to the quality, consistency, and traceability of sales technical deliverables and play an important role in technical clarification with customers and internal stakeholders.

You will join an Application Engineering team that is evolving into a scalable sales technical enablement function. We are therefore looking for someone who combines technical competence with strong execution discipline and a structured working style.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Preparing technical specifications, tender documents, and supporting proposal documentation
  • Gathering and validating technical input from customers and internal stakeholders
  • Translating customer requirements into technically feasible and commercially relevant solutions
  • Supporting Sales in technical discussions with customers, consultants, naval architects, technical directors, and fleet managers
  • Preparing sketches, parts lists, and other supporting material for special offers where required
  • Coordinating with Sales, Operations, Technology, and other internal stakeholders to align proposal inputs
  • Supporting technical and configuration input for costing and quotation preparation
  • Contributing to a reliable handover from sales to execution by ensuring clear technical scope, assumptions, and deviations
  • Contributing to continuous improvement, reusable technical knowledge, and better working methods within the team
  • Occasional travel may be required for customer meetings, internal alignment, or project-related support

Who you are

You are a structured and reliable engineering professional who enjoys translating customer requirements into clear, technically credible, and commercially relevant proposals. You are comfortable working in a sales environment where inputs evolve, revision cycles are common, and clear technical communication is essential.

You work accurately, take ownership of your deliverables, and communicate early when information is missing or timelines are at risk. You are proactive in follow-up, disciplined in the way you manage technical documentation, and able to work independently while collaborating effectively across functions.

Further, you have:

  • a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
  • relevant experience in sales/application engineering, ship system engineering, ship design, technical proposal engineering, or a similar technical role
  • the ability to translate technical requirements into structured and commercially relevant solutions
  • a disciplined and detail-oriented working style
  • good coordination and communication skills across functions such as Sales, Operations, and Technology
  • a good command of written and spoken English

It is considered an advantage if you also have:

  • experience in the marine industry or with technically complex marine engineered products
  • experience in a sales or customer-facing technical support role
  • interest in contributing to process improvement and reusable technical knowledge
